The unique progressive artistry of Kamilo Sanclemente.
After basking in the splendour of "Parallax," our recent release from Columbian electronic producer Kamilo Sanclemente, we were interested in this interview to hear more about the track and the artist behind it. Having found universal success with his back catalogue, with many of Kamilo's releases climbing across Beatport's melodic and progressive peaks, 'Parallax' careered into the Beatport hype organic house chart. The track itself is an uplifting, shimmering masterpiece in progressive artistry. The track's steady groove is overlaid with swathes of dreamlike melodies, yet it displays experimental modernism simultaneously. Like an albatross transcending the stratosphere steadily into outer space; it feels good for the soul. But poetic analogies aside, we came back down to earth and were ready to hear a little more from Kamilo himself.
Having been named one of DJ Mag Latin America's top 10 artists to follow a few years back, he has since sealed his mark on the progressive scene with pride. Snowballing his success, he has been touring the world in the process. But where did it all begin? We asked the man himself.
"I am from Cali Colombia, and of course living in such a Latin place has influenced my sound, especially in the rhythmic part. The sounds of salsa and other Latin rhythms have always influenced the groove of my tracks. First I started producing and a few years later I became a DJ."
In terms of destinations, Kamilo has travelled to an impressive list of countries with his DJ performances. Naming Argentina as one of his all time favourite places to play. His global reach can not be underestimated.
"I have had the opportunity to play in many parts of the world, without a doubt Argentina is the country where I like to play the most, but there are also other destinations where my music is very well received such as Budapest, Srilanka, Mexico among others...'
But reverting back to the micro view, what's the story behind the single?
"Parallax is inspired by dreams, those strange and endless dreams.... it is a melodic and psychedelic journey, and precisely that magic that the track transmits. I want the public to close their eyes and feel that dream."
And what of the production process; what do you use to create?
"I use Ableton; sometimes I start with a rhythmic base and I let myself go and put together the track based on the rhythm. On other occasions I arrive at the studio with a clear idea and develop it, and other times I compose from the melody."
On the subject of progressive genres, it is not long until we look at other artists Kamilo is inspired by, including progressive rock in the form of Pink Floyd (just one off hs influences)
"Many principal bands influenced me like Pink Floyd, Depeche Mode, salsa orchestras like Fania, later within electronic music, Paul van Dyk, Mauro Picotto, and in my musical maturity definitely Herman Cattaneo, Guy J among other great references ..."
A suitably diverse range of artists it seems for such progressive and innovative music. And now? What's the plan?
"Right now I have started my world tour, finished my European tour, with many destinations to conquer in South America, North America, Europe and Asia and waiting for very important releases that are about to come out..."
We look forward to hearing what else Kamilo has in store.
